Puno: Armed Forces opens Ilave - Puno Highway, Aymara protesters close it again (Spanish)
Indigenous Aymara protesters in the southern part of the Puno Region have responded to the Peruvian Army’s unblocking of roads in the border area in the early hours of the morning by immediately blocking them again.
The military carried out the cleanup work in the areas of Santa Rosa, Mazocruz, and Desaguadero.
Simultaneously, law enforcement cleared the Ilave - Puno Highway to restore traffic along a stretch of three and a half kilometers towards the community of Challacollo,
Routes Blocked
Aymara leaders of the area expressed their discomfort because they considered the Armed Forces actions a way of provoking the population that has been complying with the indefinite strike.
Within Puno, the current State of Emergency decrees "the control of internal order is in charge of the Armed Forces, incorporating the PNP". In addition, there is "mandatory social immobilization" (i.e. curfew) "of all people in their homes" from 8:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m.
The leaders indicated that they blocked the road again after hours because they will not give the central government any truce until President Dina Boluarte resigns, Congress is closed, and there is a call for new elections.
"Attrition"
A Lieutenant Governor warned that they were not taken by surprise, that “we will let the boys (soldiers) exercise. After a while we will block again, we will see who gets tired, them or the entire Aymara nation”.
He indicated that protesters would take new actions to strengthen the protest measure that the Puno Region has been abiding by.
Several days ago, the Army took the same actions in Pichacani Laraqueri, where more than a hundred soldiers were deployed in southern Puno to clear the roads.
According to reports, an Army patrol “stayed on the Laraqueri hill, where some soldiers fainted."
At the time of publication, the population of the southern zone continued with their protests.
