Cusco: Unscrupulous travel agencies transporting tourists to Machu Picchu with false promise they can visit park (Diario El Sol de Cusco [Spanish] - 1/25/2023)
The Foreign Trade and Tourism Management (GERCETUR) of Cusco denounced that informal tourism agencies and other irresponsible parties are transporting tourists to the district of Machu Picchu Pueblo, using the Amazonian route Cusco-Quillabamba-Santa María-Santa Teresa-Hidroeléctrica, with false promises they can enter the Inca citadel.
The head of GERCETUR Cusco, Abel Matto Leiva, affirmed that, on Friday, January 20th, during the transfer of tourists stranded in Machu Picchu Pueblo to Cusco carried out on Friday the 20th, at least two hundred visitors arrived even though the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco (DDCC) had closed access to the Inca citadel.
"There is no shortage of tourists who go by their own means, who are recommended by social networks such as TikTok, Instagram and others, and who later put us in trouble," said Matto Leiva, because the authorities' efforts are for the safety of visitors during sometimes violent protests.
The official commented that fortunately there were no reports of violence towards tourists in this sector but recommended that they should no longer enter due to the risks. Since the 21st of this month, Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail network is closed, and the district abides by an indefinite stoppage.
"We are entering into an awareness plan with municipalities and the Regional Tourism Advisory Committee, in which agency owners participate, and we are urging that the train frequencies and security in the archaeological heritage space are not being guaranteed, we are urging that they please do not do it, beyond that there is always irresponsibility of some people," he stressed.
The Inca citadel and the network of Inca trails to Machu Picchu, are closed to tourism, by order of the DDCC and Ministry of Culture, as a preventive measure for the protests seeking the resignation of President Dina Boluarte.
Since the closure, no one is allowed entry to Machu Picchu. Only security guards and rangers are in the park.
