The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) reported that only two grades gasoline, regular (91 octane) and premium (97 octane), will be sold at the country's taps. Minister of Energy and Mines Oscar Vera Gargurevich clarified that this measure will not affect the increase in fuel prices.

Only two types of gasoline will be marketed in Peru from January 2023.

MINEM reported that simplification will not increase prices and will be implemented gradually.

As of January 1, 2023, the adaptation process for the sale of regular and premium gasoline and gasohol (‘gasoholes’) in Peru will begin. This is within the framework of a simplification process that seeks to promote the Ministry.

In this way, gasoline and gasohol of 84, 90, 95, 97 and 98 octanes will give way to only two fuels (91 and 97 octane) that are more efficient and with less sulfur load at a national level in line with what happens in other countries in the world.

In Supreme Decree 014-2021-EM, MINEM set maximum fuel sulfur standards of less than 50 ppm for diesel fuels by July 1, 2021, and 50 ppm in gasoline and gasohol by July 1, 2022. The Decree also establishes a schedule for the commercialization of fuels with less than 10 ppm sulfur content no later than March 31st, 2024.

MINEM noted that implementation of these changes will be progressive with a 60-day period is being granted, from January 1, 2023, to producers and wholesale distributors of fuels to adapt to this process; and for faucets and direct consumers the term will be 120 days.

Due to an exception for the interior of the country, it will be possible to continue selling gasohol 84 octane gasoline until December 31, 2023, while in Loreto, Amazonas, San Martin and Madre de Dios regions 84 octane gasoline may be sold until June 30, 2024.

“MINEM, through the General Directorate of Hydrocarbons (DGH), will work in coordination with the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining (OSINERGMIN) so that wholesalers, retailers, marketers and fuel sales establishments adapt to the simplification process, given it will bring benefits to millions of Peruvians and the environment,” said the statement.
